Win Golf Lessons from Tiger Woods

Along with its sports memorabilia, Legendary Auctions is offering a three-day golf clinic with Tiger Woods in Orlando, Florida in its current auction.

Woods rarely gives clinics anymore so the May 26-28 event is a rare chance for an average player to rub shoulders with Tiger.  100% of the proceeds will be donated to a non-profit group that provides college scholarships to disadvantaged students.  A portion of the winning bid is tax deductible since it will go to a 501(c)(3) concern.   The event takes place at the Villas of Grand Cypress.

This May Be Your Only Chance at a Hole-in-One

A company in Arkansas has a website that allows users to create a fake newspaper article and become a hole-in-one-hitting “golf whisperer”.

The site allows users to generate a spoof newspaper clipping showcasing themselves, or a person of their choice, as the lucky golfer of a 487-yard Hole-In-One on Cooper’s, world class, Stonehaven Golf Course.

The player types in their name and email address–or that of a friend–then a “newspaper article,” including photo, is generated in PDF format to the user’s specifications.  The fake article looks like a newspaper page or newsletter featuring the custom named Hole-in-One “Golf Whisperer.”  Most people have a little fun by forwarding it to family or golfing friends.

“At first glance it really seems authentic,” states E. Deaton of Bentonville, AR.

The site is GolfWhisperer2009.com

Dallas Cowboys golf course goes high tech

If you like to mix your golf with a little football and haven’t been to the Dallas area lately, we can report that there is a “Cowboys Golf Club” in Grapevine, Texas.

Located approximately 20 miles from downtown Dallas and Fort Worth, Cowboys Golf Club has been named the No. 1 daily-fee golf course in the Metroplex for seven consecutive years by AvidGolfer Magazine. Designed by architect Jeff Brauer and opened for business in 2001, Cowboys is the world’s first and only NFL-themed club in the world.

The club integrates a historical tour of the franchise’s accomplishments with a display of Cowboys memorabilia and historical markers.

Now, the club has partnered with ProLink Solutions to offer GPS functionality and some video advertising.

The club’s general manager says “GPS systems will help us keep the pace of play steady, monitor our carts, and deliver a great tournament experience through the scoring software.”

ProLink uses a patented, 10.4″ high-resolution color screen mounted on carts to display what it calls “dynamic, easy-to-read graphics including distances to the pin and hazards, pro tips, pace-of-play timer and radial arc for cart-path-only holes”.   The system also offers golfers the ability to order food and beverage items with a touch of a button on the ProLink screen.

The GPS provider recently introduced ‘ProLink Touch’, the golf industry’s first cart-mounted “Touch” screen which features enhanced scoring functions which will automatically calculate “Nassau” and “Skins” results.

For courses’ bottom lines, the new system’s expansive memory stores up to 7,500 ads, generating incremental revenue through a larger sales inventory. Designed with a proprietary custom interface, ProLink says Touch delivers “lightning-fast cart-to-clubhouse communication for all purposes including two-way communications, golfer safety, food-and-beverage orders and pace-of-play alerts”.

Angel Cabrera an unlikely Masters champion..or is he?

So much for that theory of ‘tuning up’ for the Masters.

Wanna know how Angel Cabrera tuned up for the 2009 Masters?

By sucking.

Before Sunday, his PGA Tour scorecard this season read like a guy trying to keep his card–and failing.  He opened the year in Scottsdale by missing the cut.   He finished 13th at the Northern Trust Open.  Snared 33rd in the Accenture Match Play event.  Zoomed up to 32nd at the Honda Classic.  Missed the cut at Bay Hill and again last week in Houston.

Cabrera is the anti-Tiger.  He smokes. He’s 6 feet tall and somewhere far north of 200 pounds.  His nickname, ‘El Prato’ means ‘The Duck’.  Try writing commercials around that nickname, Nike.

But the biggest hunk of the 2009 Masters prize money is on its way to a bank in Argentina.  $1.35 million–or about $1.3 million more than he’d won in the first three months of the season.  It’s why Angel Cabrera items suddenly popped up on eBay Sunday night.

We could understand if Kenny Perry had won and become the oldest champion ever.  Kenny’s been on a bit of a roll the last year.  But when the game was on the line, the American fans’–er, patrons’–favorite hooked his way out of what may be his only chance at a green jacket.  Perry not only gave the Masters away, he put it in a gift box and wrote Cabrera’s name on it.  Still, you’ve got to be in it to win it and Cabrera was busy grinding out his second major championship in less than three years.

He spends most of his time playing elsewhere.  Cabrera knows some English but prefers a translator.  He just sort of shows up at our major tournaments and duck-walks his way into contention.   It’s beyond explanation.  Why can’t a guy like that be a regular winner on the Tour?   Does he even want to, really?

I don’t know, but I do know that if you bet on him to win the Masters prize money, you probably made off pretty well yourself.

Tiger Woods autographed cards in…hockey set?

The timing couldn’t be better for Upper Deck.  On the heels of Tiger Woods’ first win of 2008, the company secured some fresh autographed trading cards for it’s upcoming products, including a special hockey set that includes a number of cards decidedly…not hockey.

Upper Deck’s Chris Carlin: “We recently had a signing with Tiger Woods and received back a limited amount of the 2008-09 NHL Champ’s mini-signature cards.  They packed out as exchange cards, but we will begin fulfilling any requests received for them next week.  It will be interesting to see how activity goes on a smaller card like this of Tiger.  He signed four different versions with brown, purple, blue and black backs.  Each of the cards is VERY limited.”

Woods has an exclusive arrangement with Upper Deck.  Champs hockey singles, including at least one Tiger autographed card, are already showing up on eBay.
